Scientific-research activities Department plans to implement through two programs:

1.  Program in the field of selection and breeding of small grains

The most significant activity of the Department is breeding program of small grains (wheat, barley, rye, triticale, oats). Creating new varieties takes at least ten years, since the beginning of the first activities to the full realization of the goal, and that is the introduction of varieties in commercial production. In the past ten years Department for small grains has created numerous varieties which are recognized by the Commission for variety recognition,:

o 14 varieties of winter wheat: Sarajka, Ukrina, Pliva, Rea, Vrbas, Stojanka, Jelena, Granada, Banjalučanka, of which Kristina, Prijedor, Orion, Bosanka and New Bosanka are in production,

o  2 varieties of triticale Viktor and Oskar

o   2 varietes of barley Oziris and Kosta

o   1 variety of rye Oktavija

o   1 oat variety Sana

These varieties are in commercial production in the Republic of Srpska and the Federation of B&H, which confirms their quality on the market in competition with foreign varieties.

Besides working on the basic types of grain Department is also working on similar species, such as Triticum durum, T. turgidum, T. spelta and T. monococcum. This research can be very promising because the Department has it’s own gen collection - 2000 various genotypes.

2.  Program of management systems in small grains

Besides the main breeding program of the small grains Department is engaged in activities related to agrotechnics of small grains. These jobs are inseparable because the each of the new created variety should be examined at different sites (localities) for different agro-technical parameters.
