In the past six decades, the Institute was actively working to improve maize production through the selection work and research in the field of production technology and seed production fields. As a result of long-selection work there was created a great number of our own inbred lines whose hybridization has created 8 hybrids of high genetic yield potential. Newly created own hybrids have had a significant contribution to the increase in maize production in certain time periods in the Republic of Srpska.

Accordingly, a major objective of the Institute's contribution to improving the production and use of corn in our country, which is implemented primarily through research work.

The realization of this objective is a priority task for future breeding process, the creation of highly yield hybrids in the Institute is achieved trough increase the genetic variability of maize, combining adaptive and exotic materials through a process of long-term improvements.

Also, as a consequence of global climate change, and thus all the frequency of stressful conditions, recently observed a number of problems in the production of corn, and especially seed corn, and anomalies of the plants which cannot be explained by the knowledge of agronomists in the field.

For these reasons, there is a need for long-term, continuous research that will relate to the interpretation of many processes in the life of the plants grown in different environments and the interpretation of possible interactions. Thus, due to an increased incidence of drought in our region, indicating a great need for studying the resistance of maize to drought as a complex phenomenon, which refers to:

o  study of resistance to high temperatures,

o  study of resistance to water deficiency.

The realization of this objective is necessary for the development of new hybrids and actively work on improving existing and developing new solutions for production and harvesting corn, with special emphasis on cost-effectiveness of proposed solutions.
